The new look markets are Chinotimba Vegetable Market, Qhubani, Barca and Sizanani markets.
The Victoria Falls Municipality has refurbished vegetable and curio markets in Chinotimba and busy Island respectively, as the local authority strives to empower residents.
The two projects which were commissioned by the Mayor Councillor Sifiso Mpofu on December 6 were carried out at a cost of $93,000. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony at the municipal housing department offices, Cllr Mpofu challenged vendors to pay rates so as to facilitate service delivery.
This comes at a time when formal trader owes council $478,442 in unpaid rentals and rates. “Ladies and gentleman, the municipality is owed up to $478,442 by market vendors. This is too much and would like to urge to pay their charges so that the municipality continues to work towards providing the best services, said Cllr Mpofu. Chairperson for Chinotimba Vegetable Marketers Association Otilia Ngwenya lauded the local authority for its efforts towards ensuring a conducive vending environment. I am very happy for what the council has done for us (vendors). Our market now looks good she said.
The local authority engaged BOLTGAS to do construction work, following a council resolution held on October 28, 2015.Design for the markets were done by the municipality engineering department. They comprise steel framed sheds with metal roofing sheets that overlap to provide cover from rain and direct sun for both the vendors and their wares. There is also a perimeter wall about one metre high on the back and sides of the markets for security.
Construction is underway as some of the structures are still being face lifted as the municipality wants to ensure that its facilities adhere to the council’s mandate of providing services with an international standard.
Last year vendor’s country wide clashed with local authorities over vending markets but this didn’t happen in Victoria Falls as the council has always met vendors demands and expectations with its timely and appreciative services.
